Football Season
May 20th, 2009A big congratulations is in order to the Cairo High Syrupmakers for their State Championship last season! They represented Region 1 well and hopefully we will have another State Champion or two (or more) come from one of the Region 1’s this season.
I had a blast traveling around last year (for Chris Beckham’s Friday night radio show) to the different stadiums and I met a lot of great people. I hope to meet more of you over the summer and during the coming season. It’s a great time to be a South Georgia Football fan as the summer is almost here which means football season isn’t far behind.
The summer 7 on 7 drills are always a fun time to get out and see your team. I’ll never forget seeing Cairo last year at their 7 on 7 session in Cairo and thinking — Damn, these guys could be really good! Yeah, they weren’t bad :) I also remember seeing Coffee at Valdosta’s 7 on 7 session and thinking Coffee had some very impressive athletes. Watching the Colquitt County Packers session at Packer Park last summer was also very interesting. Seeing Coach Propst and his staff working with a group of kids who weren’t used to the high energy Propst brings was really interesting. My point is — get out there and watch these 7 on 7 sessions. You may not be able to gauge the entire team but you can certainly see the skilled athletes as well as the coaching.
Football season can’t get here soon enough!
I can’t wait to travel to Northside to see all of those great fans. It was an honor to meet those folks last year and although they didn’t agree with everything I said — they treated me like family. I have made some lasting friendships in Warner Robins.
The Fitzgerald folks were another bunch who really stood out. Coach Pruitt should have another good team this year and I can’t wait to see those great people again.
We will probably make a return trip to Moultrie this year as I know Coach Propst is putting together a solid group of Packers for the ‘09 season. I hope Rufus, Doc, and Miss Violet will welcome us with open arms.
A trip to Douglas to see the newly renovated Jardine Stadium may be in order. Coach Eldridge is one of the nicest men I’ve ever met and I can’t wait to see what kind of team he has this season!
We didn’t make it to Tifton last year and I’d like to go this year as that is one of the best places to watch a game in the entire state. They may have a young group this season but they will be solid at Quarterback!
We know we will see the Cats from Valdosta and the Vikings from Lowndes a few times during the season. These are our home-based teams and both should be really good this year. As a matter of fact, I’m predicting both will be undefeated heading into the Winnersville Classic on October 9th!
It should be a very good season in 2009. Feel free to leave comments and suggest games for us to see!
